ALLIANCE OF ILLINOIS

What is
Postpartum Depression?

The term "Postpartum Depression" is used to describe feelings of anxiety (fear and worry) or depression (sadness, loss of interest, numbness, the wish to die) experienced by some mothers following childbirth. Such feelings are severe enough to get in the way of the mother's daily functioning and can interfere with her ability to bond with and care for her baby.

In rarer cases a mother might lose touch with reality and become a danger to herself and/or her baby. This is referred to as Postpartum Psychosis.

Postpartum Depression and Psychosis are treatable! Please get help if you or a loved one feels this way.
