Participate in an HSR Student Survey
Survey Description
Approximately 10% of women who give birth will experience subsequent
postpartum depression. Postpartum depression in women is characterized by
symptoms of sadness, anxiety, worry, fear, crying, and in worst cases, suicidal
ideation, usually occurring within 6-8 weeks of giving birth. Despite its
prevalence, very little research has been done regarding postpartum depression
and its treatment. The purpose of the current study is to complete a more
comprehensive investigation regarding the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment
of postpartum depression among new mothers. If you are the mother of a child
one year or younger and you would like to participate in the survey, please

EVENTS 2006 Press Release Postpartum Awareness Rally and Paula Sims Clemency Hearing When: November 15, 2006, 10:00 A.M.Where: Thompson Center, Chicago November 15th has been declared Postpartum Awareness Day by the Melanie Stokes Foundation (melaniesbattle.org). There will be a rally to raise awareness of this disease and a press conference at which time Jed Stone, attorney for Paula Sims, as well as Carol Blocker, President of the Melanie Stokes Foundation, will be speaking. Jed Stone is representing Paula Sims, who was convicted in 1990 of murdering her daughter. Shortly after her conviction she was diagnosed with having suffered Postpartum Psychosis at the time of the crime. She has recently filed for Executive Clemency and had a hearing in front of the Illinois Prison Review Board. Carol Blocker lost her daughter, Melanie Stokes to Postpartum Psychosis. Melanie took her own life by jumping out a 12-story window shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Sommer Skyy. Postpartum Psychosis is a recent addition to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.Postpartum Psychosis is a devastating mood disorder that can develop two to four weeks postpartum or immediately after a woman gives birth. Postpartum psychosis causes paranoia, hallucinations (hearing voices urging a new mother to kill herself or her child), severe insomnia, loss of appetite, anxiety and depression. A woman suffering from postpartum psychosis often suffers alone because of the shame associated with this illness.Recent news of this disease relates to Andrea Yates, Brooke Shields and several other Chicago women.
